AFI (A Fire Inside) es una banda estadounidense de horror punk/post hardcore/punk rock formada en 1991 por Davey Havok, Markus Stopholese, Vic Chalker y Adam Carson en Ukiah, California. Vic Chalker fue reemplazado a los 8 meses por Geoff Kresge antes de sacar EP alguno. Más adelante, el propio Geoff sería sustituído por Hunter Burgan y Mark Stopholese por Jade Puget.

La banda comenzó con un estilo hardcore, de la mano de una importante oleada a principios de los 90 en California, con canciones típicas del género, de apenas dos minutos de duración e influidos por grupos como The Misfits o Dead Kennedys.[2] Además, para su segundo álbum de estudio, Very Proud of Ya, AFI firmó un contrato con Nitro Records, uno de los sellos más importantes del punk rock estadounidense. Sin embargo, con Black Sails in the Sunset lanzado en 1999, la banda comenzó a desarrollar una música más elaborada, con tendencias a la música gótica de los 80 y electrónica,[2] influenciada en gran parte por la llegada de Puget. Con The Art of Drowning y Sing the Sorrow la banda se confirmó como una banda madura y de un rock más experimental, a la vez que llegaron los éxitos en el Billboard y firmaron por una multinacional. En sus conciertos, como en el DVD I Heard a Voice, se deja ver la parafernalia gótica y las espectaculares puestas de largo de luz y sonido de la banda californiana.
